Card 1 A Letter of Advice
Hi everyone! I broke my leg a few months ago and have put on a lot of weight. Now I feel tired all the time and I also don’t feel good about the way I look. Does anyone have any advice?
Write a response of 150-200 words in which you
• Express your sympathy
• Suggest that the writer should take up physical exercise
• Suggest some healthy eating habits
Dear Jane,
Hi! I’m really sorry to hear that you’re having such a problem. I think I can help you. Here are some tips for you how to lose weight.
Firstly, the best thing you can do is to join a gym. This way, you will have access to specially designed exercise machines and qualified trainers who will make you look better in no time.
Also, it would be a good idea to choose a balanced healthy diet. Why don’t you try eating as much low-fat food as possiblt? For example, chicken, fish and yogurt are good for you. If you do this, your body will get enough carbohydrates, protein, fat, vitamins, minerals and fibre. I think you should also drink at least five glasses of water per day. Then, you won’t feel exhausted or suffer from headaches.
Hope my advice will help you. Write back and let me know your results.
Best wishes,

Hi Kate,
What have you been up to recently? I’ve got some good news! Guess what! I’ve got two tickets to Costa Rica! Why don’t you come with me?
This trip offers the perfect combination of nature and adventure while being surrounded by the stunning scenery of Costa Rica. With a great mixture of different terrains, both the sites and the activities vary. We can climb up a volcano and see the spectacular view, hike the trails through the forest in the national park and see the local wildlife and explore ancient ruins. We can also see thermal pools and relax in the natural hot springs. There also a number of impressive waterfalls and swimming holes. In the hotter areas we can see bubbling mud holes and if we are lucky we may even see a geyser erupt.
The tour starts on 13 July and we will stay there for a few weeks. I do hope you’ll come. Write soon and let me know.

Card 4 Opinion Essay + An Article for a Website
Hi everyone! You won’t believe it, but I’m in Ecuador with some friends! It was a last-minute decision, so we have no plans yet! As you know, I’m a nature lover at heart, and Ecuador is one of the most biodiverse countries in the world. There are lots of tours here, on which everything is arranged for you, but we’re thinking of exploring the area ourselves. What do you think?
Write a comment of 150-200 words in which you:
• say whether you think organized tours or independent travelling is better
• give the writer some advice on what to do during his trip
• wish the writer a good time.
These days, some people choose organized tours while others decide to travel independently. In my opinion, package deals are the most popular type of holidays nowadays. However, tourists must weight up carefully the good and bad points before choosing one.
There are both advantages and disadvantages to choosing a package deal. Some people argue that its major advantage is that there is a wide range of holidays to popular destinations on offer. For example, everything from a safari in Kenya to a walking holiday in the Lake District is available. On the other hand, there are also some disadvantages. It is clear tourists often stay in the resort complex to take advantage of the facilities and avoid additional expenses. This means that they don’t visit local attractions or learn about the people and culture of the country.
Furthermore, the best thing you can do during your stay is to go sightseeing. Why don’t you hire a guide and ask him to show you some local attractions that are not on the list of tourist hot spots? It would be a good idea to call at a genuine national café or a restaurant and taste local food. Also, I think you should try to experience the national culture and meet new people. If you do this, you will have the time of your life.
I hope you have a great time and my advice can help you. 236 words

Task
Hi! I need your advice! I saw this nice pair of trainers on an online shopping website the other day. They look really cool and are unbelievably cheap! I’ve never bought anything online, so I don’t know how safe it is. I mean, I’d have to use my dad’s credit card and I wouldn’t want anything bad to happen! Do you think I should go ahead and buy them or just wait for the sales and buy another pair from the shops?
Thanks,
Sandy
Write an email of 200 words in which you:
• Say what you think your friend should do;
• Say whether you have any experience of online shopping;
• tell her your opinion on online shopping.
Dear Alice,
Just got your email and of course I’m glad to help. Here are some tips how to protect yourself on the Internet.
Firstly, the best thing you can do is to install anti-virus software that will guard your device against identity theft. Also, it would be a good idea to have a unique password for each website used. If someone cracks the password for one site, then they will have access to a number of your favourite sites. By all means, you should make a note of the different passwords, but make sure they are well hidden away.
I have been ordering lots of things from Internet shops in the past few years. I usually visit a number of sites in no time at all and order at the click of a button.
I believe online shopping can put you at risk of credit card fraud. You must ensure that you only use reputable sites and be very careful with your credit card. Another problem that may arise is that pictures on a computer screen may not live up to your expectations and you may be disappointed when your purchase arrives.
All things considered, I strongly believe that online shopping is safe and easy. To my mind, you should only follow certain safety measures.

Dear Alice,
Hi! How’s everything going? What have you been up to recently? Thanks for your last letter in which you told me about PE lessons at your school. Now I’m going to write about sports activities in my school.
The students of my school benefit from sport in many ways. We participate in football or basketball matches as well as in competitions in many other kinds of sport. Sport helps us to keep fit and stay healthy. Team sports also teach us to work together to achieve a common goal. We learn how to be tolerant, considerate and respectful to others.

More than any other sport I’ve ever played, I enjoy basketball the best. My friends and I use every opportunity to play it. We are on the school basketball team and we also play it in the school yard after the lessons. We also enjoy watching basketball matches both on TV and at the local stadium.

“Life is short, art is long”, the saying goes. Write an essay (150-200 words) about art. Include the following:
• What is art to you?
• Do you appreciate some forms of art over others? In what ways?
• What is your favourite piece of art?

Art is the universal language of mankind which many people from different countries in the world understand. I do believe that it has the power to bring people together despite their differences.
More than any other form of art, I enjoy music the best. [Many young people watch music programmes on TV or attend live performances and I’m not an exception.] There are a number of things I enjoy about listening to my favorite kind of music. For example, I can escape from reality I live in when I’m listening to music. The only thing I’m thinking about is the music and how it makes me feel. I can feel relaxed or energized depending on my mood.
There are a number of bands that I listen to, for example, Oasis, Kasabian and Arctic Monkeys. As for my favourite piece of music, I think it’s Wonderwall by Oasis. It’s just great! 150 Words

Nowadays young people can’t live without their favourite gadgets (mobile phones, MP3 players and computers). Write an essay (150-200 words) about them. Include the following:
• What they are used for on a daily basis.
• How these inventions changed the life of young people.
• What would the life without these gadgets be like?
Can you imagine a world without your favourite gadgets? These days, many young people are becoming increasingly dependent on their computers, laptops, tablets or mobile phones. I strongly believe that devices have made our lives a lot easier.
Many young people can use various appliances in their jobs or studies as well as for entertainment. We rely on computers in almost every area of our lives on a daily basis. Computers are used in all sorts of jobs to store and process information. [Most of today’s technology would be impossible without them.] In addition, the Internet is a world-wide communication device where any information is available at any time. [It can be used day and night in a variety of languages. This means that all forms of content – books, magazines, newspapers, music and home videos – are instantly available anywhere in the world on demand.] Furthermore, you can meet people from all over the world online who share the same interests and hobbies as you. Finally, it is quick and easy to shop online. Young people can visit a lot of different websites and order at the click of a button.
Our favourite gadgets have really changed the world and improved our lives. They have already revolutionized everything in the modern world. They allow us to do thousands of things that seemed impossible a century ago.
Without computers, the life would be much more difficult. We would still waste valuable time waiting in long queues instead of shopping online. In addition, we would still pay expensive phone bills or rely on the old-fashioned postal service instead of communicating quickly, cheaply and easily with people all around the world. 277 Words

Card 19 Eragon
Write a review (150-200 words) of your favourite book. Include the following:
• Who are the main characters?
• What main ideas do you take from this book?
My favorite book is a fantasy called ‘Eragon’. The book was written by Christopher Paolini in 2003. The main characters are Eragon and Saphire, his dragon. The villains are Durza and Galbatorix. The story is set in an imaginary place called Alagesia. It’s about a 15-year-old boy who finds a strange blue stone in the mountains, which is actually a dragon’s egg! The boy and the dragon become friends. It’s the start of an adventure full of magic, wars and death. In this book we see a darker side to Eragon as he fights the evil Durza and Galbatorix.
I really like the story because it teaches us how to be a reliable friend, a brave fighter and an impartial peacemaker. The book is well worth reading. Like other fantasy books, Eragon is full of action and adventures and really exciting. It’s imaginative and magical. It is one of the most interesting books I have ever read. I can recommend you to read it. 164 Words

Card 24 Team Sports
Your physical education teacher asked you to write an essay discussing pros and cons of team sports. Write:
— whether you and your friends play sports; what sports you play;
— whether you like playing in a team or you prefer exercising on your own;
— what the advantages and disadvantages of playing sports in a team are;
— give advice on how to develop skills working in a team.
Write an essay of 150-200 words.

These days, many young people choose to play team sports such as football, basketball or volleyball. So do my friends and I. Without a doubt, playing team sports can be exciting, but what are the disadvantages?
I certainly prefer playing on a team to exercising on my own. I am a very sociable person and playing a team sport is an opportunity to make new friends and spend time together.
There are many good reasons why playing team sports can be a positive experience for me. Firstly, we like playing football or basketball as team sports teach us how to work together to achieve a common goal. Secondly, several of the key life skills are developed through working in a team. For example, you learn how to be tolerant, considerate and respectful to others.
On the other hand, playing team sports can have distinct disadvantages. To begin with, [there’s a high risk of injury while playing football or basketball.] It can sometimes be dangerous to participate in a team sport. For instance, you can get injured by accident or at least you put yourself at great risk. In addition, it is difficult to deal with failure or to balance competitiveness so there are often arguments, even fights.
If you are looking for a sport for yourself, try basketball or volleyball. It would be a good idea to join a team where you will learn the rules of the game. I also think you should use every opportunity to play a team sport. You could play on the school team or in the yard with your friends. This would help to develop vital skills and you will know each other better and learn to respect each other. 290 Words

Dear Max,
How are you? It seems a long time since I heard anything from you. Anyway, I have some news for you!
Recently I’ve seen an exciting film called Eragon. It’s a fantasy starring Ed Speleers and Jeremy Irons. I really like Ed Speleers who plays the part of Eragon.
The film is fast-paced. The plot is thrilling with lots of twists and turns. The special effects are amazing, especially in the fight scenes. The acting is excellent, too.
The film is well worth seeing. Like other fantasy films, Eragon is full of action and adventures. It’s really exciting. I can recommend you to watch Eragon. I’d better go now. Write me soon.

Card 26
You are a member of a local environmental group. Write a leaflet entitled « Keep Your City Clean! » using the following points:
— draw readers' attention to the problems your neighbourhood is facing;
— tell about the existence of some possibilities to solve the problems;
— invite people to take part in a « clean-up day» and write the date, the time and the place of the gathering.
Write a leaflet of 150-200 words.
[Our town is very popular with tourists, especially in the summer. Unfortunately, tourism has had some negative effects on the environment.] The conditions in our neighbourhood are getting worse every day. We have a number of problems, the problem of litter, in particular.
[There are a number of solutions to our neighbourhood’s problems.] I believe the best suggestions would be to increase the number of litter bins and to initiate a clean-up day. Firstly, the problem of litter could be solved quite easily by providing more rubbish bins in public places. As a result, people would stop dropping litter on the ground. [Furthermore, we could also pay our road sweepers overtime to work extra hours during the tourist season. This would be more expensive but would also help solve the problem.]
The best thing we can do to solve the problem of litter is to initiate a clean-up day in our neighbourhood. The event will be held at 10 am this Saturday. We are going to start from Schmidt’s Park [which is full of litter and it doesn’t look very good.] Bring your friends and family and help clean up your neighbourhood. All you can do is pick up every last piece of litter and throw it in the bag. We can’t wait to see you on Eco-Saturday! 226 Words

Hi! How’s everything going? I’m writing to tell you about the way of celebrating Christmas in Great Britain. We’re having a great time here, in London.
As you know, I’m staying with my pen-friend called Ann in her beautiful large house. It’s a marvellous place .The rooms are spacious and light. The location is really convenient as there are lots of shops, cafes and restaurants in the area. The weather in London is so changeable. It’s been quite cold, grey and wet but the forecast says it’s going to snow soon.
People try to celebrate Christmas together with their family and exchange presents. Weeks before Christmas people start buying gifts for their friends and families. Most people also decorate their homes. Everyone wears waterproof warm clothes, warm hats and scarves. Many families eat Christmas lunch together. It is traditional to cook turkey and roast potatoes followed by special pudding and mince pies.
I’m really enjoying taking part in Christmas celebration in Great Britain. What I like best is its unique atmosphere. Well, that’s all for now. I can’t wait to see you again.
